The Ace Cafe: All Night on the North Circular

10 February 2024

Opened in 1938 as a roadside stop for lorry drivers, the Ace Cafe became the undisputed spiritual home of the Ton Up Boys — open all night, jukebox always running.

The Ace Cafe opened in 1938 as a utilitarian roadside stop for the lorry drivers who ran goods along the North Circular Road in northwest London. Nobody who sat in its first fluorescent-lit booth could have imagined that it would become one of the most significant venues in the history of British popular culture. By the late 1950s, as rock and roll rewired the ambitions of working-class youth, the Ace had been discovered by the ton-up riders, and everything changed.

The formula was simple but intoxicating. A Wurlitzer jukebox loaded with Eddie Cochran, Duane Eddy, and Gene Vincent provided a continuous soundtrack to strong tea, fried eggs, and conversation that always turned, eventually, to horsepower. Outside, under the sodium glow of the North Circular, bikes were lined up like exhibits in the most thrilling motorcycle show imaginable — Triumphs, BSAs, Nortons, Vincents — their riders conducting impromptu speed runs between the end of one record and the start of the next.

The record run was the defining ritual of the Ace. A rider would select a song on the jukebox, then sprint to the road and attempt to complete a stretch before the music ended. The longer the track, the better the chance of success. Songs by Bo Diddley and Del Shannon became unlikely timing devices for young men pushing their machines toward a hundred miles per hour on a public road in the middle of the night.

The café closed in 1969 as rising land values and changing tastes conspired against it. But the legend never dimmed. A restoration project returned it to life in the 1990s, and today the original building hosts regular bikers' meets and vintage reunions that draw enthusiasts from across Europe. The Ace Cafe is a living monument to the ton-up era — its formica tables still sticky with the memory of ten thousand midnight coffees.
